Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Don't Fix What Isn't Broken.
Do More Of What Works.

SFBT is the world's most efficient goal-directed therapy model β€” created by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg. Stop analyzing the problem. Start building the solution. In as little as 6-8 sessions, you'll have a clear picture of the future you want, and concrete steps to get there.

What SFBT Is

You Already Know What Works. We Just Amplify It.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a radical shift from most therapy models. Instead of spending months unpacking why you're stuck, SFBT spends minutes understanding when you're NOT stuck β€” and then systematically scales up those moments. It's built on one beautiful truth: you already have exceptions to the problem. Those exceptions are your solution.

Nigel uses the full de Shazer/Berg toolkit: miracle questions to crystallize your desired future, exception questions to mine what's already working, scaling questions to make progress measurable, and "do more of what works" experiments that create immediate momentum. Most SFBT clients reach their initial goal in 6-8 sessions β€” not years.

SFBT isn't about ignoring the problem. It's about spending 5% of the time acknowledging it and 95% of the time building the solution. Energy flows where attention goes. Solution-focused attention = solution-focused results.

4 Signature SFBT Tools

Miracle. Exceptions. Scaling. Experiments.

Four deceptively simple questions. Four life-changing tools. Every SFBT conversation is built from these four building blocks.

✨

The Miracle Question

The most famous question in brief therapy. It crystallizes the exact future you actually want, in vivid, sensory detail.

Nigel Asks: "Suppose tonight, while you sleep, a miracle happens and the problem that brought you here is solved. When you wake up tomorrow morning β€” what's the FIRST small thing you'd notice that tells you the miracle happened?"
πŸ”

Exception Questions

Mine your own life for moments the problem didn't happen. These are not "flukes" β€” they're the blueprint for the solution.

Nigel Asks: "Tell me about a time recently when the problem could have happened, but didn't. What were you doing differently? What was different about that day?"
πŸ“

Scaling Questions

Turn vague feelings ("I'm better") into measurable numbers ("I went from 3/10 to 7/10"). Progress you can see is progress you keep.

Nigel Asks: "On a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 is the worst the problem has ever been and 10 is the miracle day you described β€” where are you RIGHT NOW? What would one number higher look like?"
πŸ§ͺ

Solution Experiments

Every session ends with one tiny "experiment" for the week. Small, measurable, built entirely from YOUR exceptions.

Nigel Assigns: "This week, instead of 'fix everything' β€” deliberately do one small thing from that 'exception day' you described. Tuesday morning, do the coffee ritual exactly like you did that day, and notice what shifts."

SFBT Advantages

4 Reasons SFBT Is The Fastest-Growing Brief Model Worldwide.

⏱️

Actually Brief

6-8 sessions, not 6-8 years. SFBT is the model used by Employee Assistance Programs for a reason: it produces measurable ROI fast.

πŸ’ͺ

Strength-Focused

Therapy shouldn't make you feel broken. SFBT makes you feel resourceful β€” because it's built entirely on YOUR existing strengths and wins.

🎯

Crystal Clear Goals

You'll leave Session 1 with a written "well-formed goal" β€” specific, measurable, sensory, and actually achievable in weeks not months.

πŸ”

Results That Compound

Each week's tiny win becomes next week's baseline. Progress builds exponentially. The momentum itself becomes the motivation.

"You were at a 4 last week. You're at a 6 today. What did YOU do to move the number 2 points up?"

03

Miracle & Exceptions

Go deeper into the miracle picture β€” or find another exception to the problem. Evidence before insight.

04

One Experiment

End with one tiny, concrete experiment for the week. Built entirely from your existing successes. Do more of what works.

Questions

SFBT FAQ

Does SFBT "ignore" real problems and trauma?

+

Not at all. A common misperception. SFBT acknowledges pain fully β€” it just doesn't camp there. If you've been stuck in something for 5 years, spending 5 more sessions understanding "why" you're stuck is unlikely to unstick you. Spending 1 session understanding WHEN you're NOT stuck, then scaling those moments, almost always does. If deeper processing of old trauma IS needed, Nigel will tell you β€” and seamlessly integrate SFBT with narrative, EMDR referrals, or psychodynamic work as appropriate.

Is 6-8 sessions really enough?

+

For the INITIAL goal you walked in with β€” yes, typically. Research on SFBT outcomes consistently shows 70-80% of clients reach their initial well-formed goal within 8 sessions. That said, many clients choose to continue after: setting bigger goals, doing deeper work, or using Nigel as a thought partner for major life decisions. "Brief" doesn't mean "done forever." It means you'll see meaningful change in weeks, not months.

What if I DON'T know what I want?

+

Then we start with the miracle question. Most people who "don't know what they want" actually DO know β€” they just haven't been asked the right question. The miracle question is specifically designed to bypass the "I don't know" part of the brain and access the part that already has a very clear picture of the life it wants. By Session 2, you will have a written well-formed goal. Guaranteed.

You've Waited Long Enough. The Solution Is Already Inside You.
