What is Christie Heart?

Christie Heart was created from a deeply personal story of love, resilience, compassion and the belief that even through life's most difficult experiences, there can still be hope, connection and healing.

More Than A Name

A story built from love and resilience.

Christie Heart is more than the name of a psychotherapy practice. It carries the memory of a woman whose life was shaped by hardship, love, perseverance and an extraordinary ability to care for others even when she was struggling herself.

Her Story

In memory of Jean Christie

Jean Christie was born on November 12th, 1964. Jean was someone special to a lot of people, but no one more than myself (Nigel), her son.

My mom always demonstrated kindness, compassion and love to all those around her, more so than to herself. Jean always had a smile on her face and would have those around her smile and laugh — whether it was making dirty jokes, poking fun at myself, or laughing at herself.

She always tried her best to ensure those around her were filled with all the love they required and more.

Jean Christie was born in Nova Scotia, but did not truly know her birth family until into the later part of her life. My mother had anything but a “normal” life growing up, experiencing trauma from a very early age.

My mother never spoke about these incidents to anyone and only on occasions would a grief burst occur and I would hear her speak about the sexual and physical abuse.

She was in pain, but behind that smile no one knew just how much. Not even myself. Shame, grief and guilt are all feelings that she held tight to her chest every day — feelings that not even I could heal or fully understand.

She was strong for me and for others.

A Life Of Perseverance

She kept going, no matter what.

Jean did not have an easy path. But through every challenge, she continued working, caring and providing. Her life was a testament to determination and the love she carried for her son.

Compassion

Jean continually gave kindness, warmth and love to the people around her, often putting their needs before her own.

Resilience

Despite the hardships she experienced, Jean continued to work, provide and move forward through difficult seasons of life.

Unconditional Love

Above everything, Jean wanted her son to know that he was loved and that having him meant more to her than anything else.

She Worked For Us

She gave everything she had.

Jean did not have much going for her with only a high school education, making the prospect of finding a well-paying job difficult for her.

But she did anything she could. She worked with young adults with developmental disabilities, washed dishes, cleaned colleges overnight, sold door to door, worked as a cleaner in restaurants and eventually worked as an order picker for Longos.

My mom worked hard to provide for herself and myself. At times, she had to rely on her sister and unemployment for security.

My mom did not have a lot, but she always told me that she had me — and that was more than enough than she could ever have asked.

A Mother's Sacrifice

She thought she had failed.

My mom at points could not pay rent, could not afford clothes for myself or her, and food at points was difficult. But she always tried to give me the world.

Even at Christmas, I'd watch her cry because she could not afford to buy me gifts. Sometimes I would not receive any, or my aunt would step in and ensure that I had gifts as a child.

As a young child one does not understand... but I did.

A Different Perspective

She carried shame and guilt.

My mom, with her shame, guilt and grief, now had disappointment and failure as a mother on her shoulders.

A mom who thought of herself as a failure, in my eyes was the hardest working best mom ever.

She may have believed she was falling short, but what I remember is a woman who kept showing up. A woman who worked. A woman who loved. A woman who tried.

She did not give me everything the world could offer. She gave me herself.

And that was everything.

“I'm sorry I can't give you the world. I'm sorry Nige.”

The Story Continues

Her story became Christie Heart.

This is only part of Jean's story. There is more to share about her life, her struggles, her strength, and the impact she had on the people around her. Christie Heart exists in part to honour that story — and to carry forward the compassion, understanding and humanity that Jean gave so freely to others.
